چکیده
The results from experiments in which a two-frequency COZ laser is used to beat-excite large-amplitude, relativistic electron plasma waves in a tunnel-ionized plasma are reported. The plasma wave is diagnosed by injecting a beam of 2 MeV electrons and observing the energy gain and loss of these electrons, as well as the scattering and deflection of the transmitted electrons near 2 MeV. Accelerated electrons up to 30 MeV have been observed. The lifetime of the accelerating structure as seen by small-angle Thomson scattering is about 100 ps, whereas the injected electrons are seen to be scattered or deflected by the plasma for several ns, with diffuse scattering occurring 0.5-l ns after forming the plasma wave and whole beam deflection occurring at later times. A simple model, which includes laser focusing, ionization, transit time, and relativistic saturation effects, suggests that the wave coherence may be short lived while the wave fields themselves persist for a longer time. This may be the reason for the disparate time scales between the Thomson scattering and the electron scattering diagnostic. The whole beam deflection may be evidence for a Weibel-like instability at later times.

Acceleration of Injected Electrons by the Plasma Beat Wave Accelerator
In this paper we describe the recent work at UCLA on the acceleration of externally injected electrons by a relativistic plasma wave. A two frequency laser was used to excite a plasma wave over a narrow range of static gas pressures close to resonance. Electrons with energies up to our detection limit of 9.1 MeV were observed when 2.1 MeV electrons were injected in the plasma wave. No accelerat...
متن کاملThe Plasma Beat Wave Accelerator - I Experiments
In the Plasma Beat Wave Accelerator, acceleration is achieved by a longitudinal electrostatic field produced as a result of charge separation generated by a plasma wave traveling close to the speed of light. The plasma wave in turn is produced by two colinear laser pulses whose amplitude is modulated so that the beat frequency matches the plasma frequency. Optical mixing and Raman forward scatt...
متن کاملCharacteristics of Electron Acceleration in a Self-modulated Laser Wakefield
Acceleration of electrons by an electron plasma wave has been of great current interest because of its much larger acceleration gradient than that of conventional rf linacs [1]. Several methods have been proposed for driving a largeamplitude fast-phase-velocity plasma wave [1]. In the Laser Wake-Field Accelerator (LWFA), an electron plasma wave is driven resonantly by a short laser pulse throug...
متن کاملLaser-Plasma Accelerators: A Status Report
In this paper, the status of the Laser-Plasma Accelerator field within the Advanced Accelerator Concepts area of research is reviewed. In particular, I review the status of the Plasma Beat Wave Acceleration (PBWA) scheme, the SelfModulated, Laser-Wake Field Acceleration (SMLWFA) scheme and the Laser-Wake Field Acceleration (LWFA) scheme. In all these three schemes, charged particles are acceler...

One of the interesting Laser-Plasma phenomena, when the laser power is high and ultra intense, is the generation of large amplitude plasma waves (Wakefield) and electron acceleration. An intense electromagnetic laser pulse can create plasma oscillations through the action of the nonlinear pondermotive force. electrons trapped in the wake can be accelerated to high energies, more than 1 TW. Of t...
